What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Before we answer this question, we have to know what a platelet is.
A platelet is a blood cell that plays a major role in clotting our blood in case of injury, and is loaded with granules that contain several growth factors that help in tissue regeneration, repair and healing. PRP is the combination of these activated platelets with a fibrin matrix that acts as an adhesive scaffolding for these platelets to attach to the receptors found on most tissues in the body, particularly fibroblasts, which produce collagen and elastin, needed for repair of damaged skin and other tissues such as bones, muscles and tendons.
How is it prepared?
The patient’s own blood is placed in small blood tubes used in lab testing. Under sterile conditions, the blood is centrifuged and processed for injection.
How is it used in Cosmetic Surgery?
- Skin wrinkles and "cracking"
- Scars
- Keloid
- STRETCH MARKS
- Skin coloring irregularities
- Skin flaccidity
- Facial Contouring problems
- Hair thinning and loss
- Post Hair Transplant
- Adjunct to Stem Cells in Fat transfer
How is the procedure performed?
When the PRP is prepared for injection, the treatment area is cleansed thoroughly. A fine needle is attached to a small syringe filled with PRP which injected at certain skin levels to achieve proper delivery and distribution. Pain is described as discomfortable as a Botox injection or less. The skin is softly massaged for molding and distribution of PRP, and to apply pressure to prevent minimal bruising before it occurs.
How much Time does it take?
The whole procedure, from blood drawing to injection and discharge should be less than hour.
What is my down-time?
Half a day.
How many times do I do this?
Depending on the condition you are treating and how much damage exists, the average is three treatments. Six weeks followed by six months. After a year an evaluation will be necessary to determine continuation. Reports indicate that patients continue to improve over several years after their last treatment.
Is it Safe?
Absolutely. It is your own blood and is non allergenic nor synthetic.
