Understanding Gynecomastia

The word ‘gynecomastia’ comes from the Greek words for ‘woman’ and ‘breast’ and describes a common condition that affects boys and men. As the name suggests, gynecomastia is characterized by overdeveloped and enlarged breasts. This condition is caused by a hormonal imbalance which in turn has a variety of causes. They include puberty, certain genetic disorders, illness, puberty, and the aging process. We at Bella Forma CSC & Medspa encourage you to learn more about gynecomastia and what you can do about it.

How is Gynecomastia Treated?

Gynecomastia may go away on its own, especially if the patient is young. In other cases it may persist, whereupon a doctor will try to determine the cause. To that end, they will take a detailed patient history. If gynecomastia is causing the patient discomfort or embarrassment of any kind, the doctor may suggest surgery.

What Does Gynecomastia Surgery Involve?

Gynecomastia surgery is a type of breast reduction surgery. If the patient’s breasts are mostly fat, they may need nothing more than a liposuction procedure. If they also have excess fatty and/or glandular breast tissue will be removed to produce a flatter, more masculine chest. This procedure offers a significant outcome with very little downtime; it can effect a more virile shape, reduce discomfort, and elevate self-image.
